LAYERS STREAMING SOFTWARE RUNNING ON AWS

Layers Stream

Wheatstone demonstrates first practical use of cloud for broadcast applications.

NEW BERN, NC, USA – This NAB show, Wheatstone presents a cloud version of Layers Stream running on Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the first practical use of cloud for broadcast applications.

Layers Stream software includes stream provisioning, audio processing and metadata support. It is part of the Wheatstone Layers Software Suite, which also has software modules for running instances of FM/HD processing and mixing in cloud data centers such as AWS or on-premise servers.

Layers streaming instances running in AWS can be brought up rapidly and torn down rapidly and controlled through a browser-like user interface. Layers Stream includes audio processing designed specifically for streaming applications and Lua transformation filters to convert metadata input from any automation system into any required output format, including Triton Digital, for transmission to a CDN.

Wheatstone’s Layers Software Suite also has a Layers FM module and a Layers Mix module for radio and television. Layers Mix has a full-featured mix engine and Glass virtual mixers for the laptop, tablet or touchscreen with routing, logic, automixing and full native IP audio integration with major automation systems.

Layers modules can be used for remote or REMI applications between studios and cloud data centers or for extending studio failover redundancy across multiple cloud data centers. In the case of an on-prem server, Layers Software Suite can replace racks of processors, PCs and mix engines in the rack room.

Wheatstone will demonstrate Layers Stream and other cloud applications at NAB booth W3000, including new LXE console “cloud control” for producing shows in the cloud using Radio.Cloud Live Studio software.

WHEATSTONE ADDS TRITON DIGITAL PROTOCOL TO STREAMING PRODUCTS

WHEATSTONE ADDS TRITON DIGITAL PROTOCOL TO STREAMING PRODUCTS

Triton Audio Marketplace, programmatic ad exchange for monetizing ad inventory, among the benefits for Wheatstone’s large installed base of AoIP customers.

NEW BERN, NC, USA  − April 4, 2023 − Wheatstone’s streaming appliances and Layers cloud streaming software are now available with Triton Digital’s streaming protocol.

Wheatstone is a leading broadcast AoIP equipment manufacturer whose WheatNet-IP Intelligent Network includes streaming appliances for provisioning, audio processing and metadata support of multiple streaming channels.

Triton Digital, the global technology and services leader to the digital audio, podcast, and broadcast radio industries, provides a fully owned and operated streaming audio CDN whose custom transport protocol, MRV2 (Media Relay version 2), has been made available to Wheatstone. Triton developed this proprietary protocol between the station’s master control room and the CDN to achieve the most accurate ad stitching and to ensure a high-quality listening experience.

Combining the two provides seamless integration between the studio AoIP system and content delivery, plus offers new streaming revenue opportunities for Wheatstone’s large installed base of customers around the world. “Managing this under one protocol between Triton and WheatNet simplifies the streaming process for our customers and introduces a few monetization benefits,” said Wheatstone Senior Software Engineer Rick Bidlack, referring to Triton’s programmatic ad exchange for monetizing ad inventory.

“This is a deep metadata and encoded audio integration that will give Triton Digital customers Wheatstone audio processing, Nielsen watermarking, and all those streaming functions by Wheatstone they’ve been asking for,” said Jean-Luc Wasmer, VP, Architecture and Partnerships, Triton Digital.

Unique to Wheatstone streaming products are audio processing tools designed specifically for streaming and bandwidth optimization.

Unique to Triton Digital’s streaming protocol is its ability to timestamp any metadata down to the millisecond enabling precise ad insertion in real-time.

Affected are WheatNet-IP streaming appliances Wheatstream and Streamblade as well as Layers Stream, which is part of the Wheatstone Layers Software Suite for mixing, streaming and FM/HD processing instances in house on a server or off-site at an AWS or other cloud data center.

Wheatstone streaming products accept most open-source and major proprietary streaming protocols.

In 2020, Wheatstone won an Emmy for the “development of synchronized multichannel uncompressed audio transport over IP networks," which led to the implementation of the AES67 standard.

Wheatstone will be demonstrating its streaming appliances and software at booth W3000 during the NAB show along with the latest Wheatstone AoIP and cloud products.

Wheatstone Announces Partnership With Radio.Cloud

Wheatstone User Interface

The result is radio's first cloud-native automation and AoIP in one.

NEW BERN, NC, USA – A recent partnership between Wheatstone and Radio.Cloud has resulted in the industry’s first fully integrated cloud environment combining program automation with AoIP control and routing. Together, the two offer a platform that integrates native AoIP with cloud-native automation for a large installed base of Wheatstone studios around the globe.

Wheatstone brings its WheatNet-IP audio network to the partnership. WheatNet-IP is a large ecosystem of AoIP studio elements and third-party technology partners, from consoles and virtual interfaces to routable audio codecs, EQ dynamics, mixing, stream provisioning, scripting tools and more.

Radio.Cloud contributes its browser-based Live Studio and cloud-native automation system, the first of its kind in the radio industry.

By integrating Radio.Cloud's Live Studio software with WheatNet-IP AoIP control and routing, broadcasters can control automation and studio functions (manipulating faders and other console controls) from either the Radio.Cloud interface or WheatNet-IP control surfaces. This means users will get a response either in the browser with a virtual console such as the Glass LXE and Remote LXE, or on the hardware itself.

“Radio.Cloud is fully dedicated to a cloud-native operation, but there are many cases where a hybrid model makes absolute sense. Wheatstone is an ideal partner for us because Radio.Cloud can now perfectly communicate with the on-prem hardware,” said Christian Brenner, CEO and Founder of Radio.Cloud. “They have one of the largest installed bases of AoIP systems in the industry."

“Partnering with Radio.Cloud extends the reach and capability of our AoIP network for our customers now. But it also moves us all a step closer to the future, where radio can be a lot more mobile and agile – and that only benefits the industry as a whole,” agreed Wheatstone’s Technology Manager

Dominic Giambo.

Radio.Cloud is the first cloud-native automation system certified as a partner of Amazon Web Services (AWS). The platform serves more than 150 affiliates across Europe and North America. Wheatstone is the industry’s leading AoIP manufacturer, based in New Bern, North Carolina, where it engineers, manufactures and supports its console, AoIP, audio processing and digital editing product lines.

In 2020, Wheatstone won an Emmy for “development of synchronized multichannel uncompressed audio transport over IP networks" which led to the implementation of the AES67 standard. Currently, the two forward-thinking companies are working on integrating Radio.Cloud with Wheatstone’s new cloud Layers Software Suite to bring high-quality audio processing software to cloud data centers.

Wheatstone will be demonstrating its latest cloud advancements and partnerships at the NAB Show, booth W3000, while Radio.Cloud will show off its automation and live studio platforms at booth W1773.
